But first, here’s an origin story: A few years ago, former biologist-turned-illustrator Sabina Radeva had a problem. She wanted to show her daughters Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, which is the famous book about natural selection and the basis of studies on evolution, or the theory of how living things develop from earlier forms. Sabina quickly realized that many of the books out there were not very child-friendly and saw a chance to create a version that she could share with her kids.
The artist launched a crowd-funding campaign in order to produce it. The project not only succeeded, but nine publishers called with interest.
The result is a beautiful retelling of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species and was an instant bestseller. Sabina’s book won several awards, and has been translated into 31 languages.
